MatService was born from the hassle of having to have four or five different weather apps open in New Zealand to just find our what the actual weather was going to do, what to take on an adventure and if I needed to put sunscreen on (as I have pretty fair skin and even on the cloudiest of days, it’s burn central).

The web app is powered by Open-Meteo and the charts built using Chart.js. It’s easy to use and gives you a quick view of the forecast, what to wear and what you should take if you’re going on an adventure.

The cool thing is that it’s got a bit of charm. It’s not just the data, it drives you to an answer, not a complex maths problem.

Also, just like all of my projects, it’s privacy centric.

MatService is using non-invasive analytics by Fathom and the search stays in your browser storage and you only tell it your location if you want to (it defaults to Chch if you don’t but you can search). The location is used only to fetch weather – I don’t see it and it just calls the correct Open Meteo weather for that location.

It’s not totally perfect and I’ll keep adding updates (as I’m using it every day myself).

As always, forecasts can differ by region and elevation, check conditions before heading out.

Note: MatService.org is an independent passion project and has no connection, endorsement, or affiliation with New Zealand’s MetService / Te Ratonga Tirorangi. It doesn’t even use any of their data. It is, however, quite fun to use 🙂
