Looking back: April, May and June

A twenty day run streak... the quarter where 26in2026 stopped feeling like a dare.

After that 3 month start and sickness in March... this "Q2" was going to be the strongest quarter of the year so far, and I mostly didn't notice how well I was doing, because I was too busy lacing up my shoes. Bahahaha... well, kind of.

April

After the sick month in March, I really wanted to get back to it properly. April was a bit better and felt like me getting my confidence back.

27 runs, 139 km, and then on the very last day of the month I ran 15.2 km on mixed terrain, which was great to smash it out in the Port Hills.

I remember finishing that one and thinking that the body I'd been worried about in March had quietly got a lot stronger while I wasn't paying attention.

May

May was the big one! Woohoo!

32 runs, which is the most in any month, 155 km and nearly 1,800 m of climbing, and in the middle of it a twenty day streak where I ran every day from the 7th to the 26th.

I'd be lying if I said it was always fun - more like 'type two' fun. Some of those days were cold and a bit grim, and the best thing about a streak is that on those days you don't have to negotiate with yourself - it's just a habit.

It also took the pressure off.

By the end of May I'd made up the March shortfall and was well ahead of where I needed to be, which meant every run after that felt like a bonus instead of an obligation to get any more on the board.

June

June looked quieter on paper, 29 runs and 110 km, with only 778 m of climbing, but it was the month I ran with the kids the most (thanks fo Cross Country practice!). Those runs are short and slow and involve a lot of stopping... but great to be out and racing around.

The second quarter in numbers

  • 88 runs, which put me 7 ahead of the 26 a month schedule
  • 36 hours on my feet and 4,123 m of climbing
  • A twenty day run streak!
